Early Life and Education
Wilhelm Rontgen was born on March 27, 1845, in a small town in Germany called Lennep, which is in the Rhine Province.
Friedrich Conrad Rontgen, his father, sold cloth, and Charlotte Constanze Frowein, his mother, took care of the home. Wilhelm was the family's only child.
Rontgen went to high school in Utrecht, Netherlands. He was very good at math and science there.
Later, he went to the Federal Polytechnic Institute in Zurich, Switzerland, to study mechanical engineering. In 1869, he got his Ph.D.
Career and Discoveries
Rontgen worked as a professor at the University of Strasbourg and the Academy of Agriculture in Hohenheim after he got his PhD.
In 1875, the University of Giessen gave him a job as a professor of physics.
Rontgen made his most important discovery while he was living in Giessen. In 1895, he was experimenting with cathode rays and noticed that a screen covered with a fluorescent material gave off a new type of radiation when exposed to the rays.
This radiation could go through many things, including human tissue, and make an image on photographic plates.
Rontgen called this new type of radiation "X-rays," and his discovery changed the field of medicine right away. Soon, doctors and researchers were using X-rays to find out what was wrong with people with broken bones, tuberculosis, and cancer, among other things.

Rontgen won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901 for finding out how X-rays work. He was the first physicist to get this award, and his work changed the field of medicine in a big way.
